Papers of Benjamin Franklin Shambaugh (1871-1940), including correspondence, mss. of writings, biography, reports, speeches, lecture notes, photos, and other materials, relating to his career as a political science teacher at State University of Iowa (later University of Iowa), his interest in Iowa history, and his association with State Historical Society of Iowa; and papers of his wife, Bertha M.H. Shambaugh (1871-1953), author, including mss. of Amana (1908), Amana That Was and Amana That Is (1932), and other writings, speeches, 36 vols. of house books (ca. 1902-1941) consisting of notebooks containing Mrs. Shambaugh's records of events in the Shambaugh household, photos, and other materials; together with papers of Alma Hovey, relating to her research and notes made in preparation of the biography of Benjamin F. Shambaugh. Major correspondents include Zoe Akins, Julian P. Boyd, John Drinkwater, Hamlin Garland, Laurence C. Jones, Thomas H. Macbride, and W.W. Waymack.

Zoë Akins (1886-1958) was a dramatist, novelist, poet and screenwriter. Benjamin Shambaugh was born in Elvira, Iowa. He received degrees from the University of Iowa and the University of Pennsylvania. He married Bertha M. Horack in 1897.
